As someone who writes Irish stories I ask myself “What is an Irish myth” More importantly I wonder why people read these myths and what difference it could make to their lives if any. Do they read them for entertainment only or because they feel it connects them too their Irish roots. Either way they could be missing out on an invitation to a language of transformation.
I have a confession to make. I find many of the Irish myths and stories as shared in books boring. When I read them they have lots of characters who are Gods and Goddesses that have no meaning to me as a person living with the internet and advanced technology in the 21st Century.
More than this I can understand why people consider myths as something not real or in some cases a lie. This is why I take mythic stories and write them in a way that has meaning for me and thus I hope has meaning for the reader.

Irish Mythology by way of Poetry – The Song of Wandering Aengus – W. B. Yeats
Let me give you my definition of what I consider to be an Irish myth.
An Irish myth is a story set in the land of Ireland that features objects and characters that are symbolic of the energy within you that will allow you to realise the magnificence of who you are created to be in the world of time and space. – Tony Cuckson
You won’t find this definition anywhere else or anything like it other than in the similarity that it involves storytelling and the land of Ireland.
Let me share with you an example from an Irish myth called The Four Treasures of Ireland that will highlight the above definition that I have shared in relation to the question “What is an Irish myth.”

Irish Mythological Story of the Four Treasures of the Tuatha De Danaan
The four treasures of Ireland are
- The Stone of Destiny
- The Sword of Nuada
- The Spear of Lugh
- The Cauldron of Plenty.
These are the four magical treasures of the mythic people called The Tuatha de Danaan.
You will find people searching the internet who think that the Tuatha de Danaan are an actual race of people who landed in Ireland. This is where myth is taken literally and thus loses all its power and meaning. You see the same thing happening with Bible stories. Take them literally and they lose their power.
What relevance has a stone, a sword a spear and a cauldron have for a modern person working and living in the twenty first century. Surely a mobile phone, a laptop, a motor vehicle with magical powers would be better suited for this time.
The difference is that thoughout much of human history the above four objects have symbolic significance. What I mean by the term “symbolic significance” is that they represent magical objects.
It cannot be said enough that these magical objects are not something that exist in the outer world. They represent magical and powerful energies within you. If you read myths in this way as a journey of inner revelation then at least you are reading them aright.
If you recognize the language of mythology as pointing to unrealized potential within you then myth has the opportunity to give your life meaning.
Despite this living thread of Celtic storytelling, at times the stories, wisdom, sacred knowledge, and intent of the traditions have been misplaced or seemingly forgotten, leading to a state of mythic crisis. When we become disconnected from the mythic roots of who we are, this often translates into a loss of our spiritual way of seeing and being. – Frank MacEowen – The Celtic Way of Seeing

If you are interested in the power of myth to live the life you love then I recommend you explore the following books. The first book is written by myself and is about the Four Treasures of Ireland.
- Being Beautiful – Learning to Treasure the REAL You – Tony Cuckson
- The Celtic Way of Seeing: Meditations on the Irish Spirit Wheel by Frank Henderson MacEowen.
- The Wisdom of Fairytales – Rudolf Myer
- Beyond the Mist – Reflections On Irish Mythology: What Irish Mythology Can Teach Us About Ourselves – Peter O’Connor
- Women Who Run With The Wolves: Contacting the Power of the Wild Woman – Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Ph.D.
The above books will give you a foundational understanding in learning the depth of myth and fairy tales and how they are more than just stories for entertainment of children. They invite the realistion of your magical childlike Presence. In this way I hope that I might invite you on a magical and mythic journey to Companion Your Greatness (W. B. Yeats)

Irish Mythology – A Journey into Finding Meaning and Purpose for Life
If you read the story The Four Treasures of Ireland literally then it will be a story about a mythic Irish race called the Tuatha de Danaan who have four magic treasures. If you read the story beyond the literal then the story is about you and four energies that you are intended to realise within yourself and to pour into the world for your own highest good and the good of all.
- Stone of Destiny – Meaning and Purpose
- Sword of Nuada – Spiritual Discernment.
- Spear of Lugh – Focus and One-Pointedness
- Cauldron of Plenty – Awakened Heart.
So which is it to be? Will you read Irish myths (or any other myths) with a mind for information or will you read with a mind that invites the possibility transformation. This is the power of myth rather than the power of intellectual information. All these treasures can only be found in one way and this way has been taught throughout time. This is the practice of turning within by way of meditation.
I am of Ireland
And the holy land of Ireland
Come dance with me in Ireland
W. B. Yeats – I Am of Ireland

If myth invites you to commit to such practice, then it has served its purpose. Don’t dishonor it by simply taking any such mythic story literally. For one thing to do so tends to be boring. It becomes a story that is hard to believe because what relevance does it have for your life now.
