As a storyteller, writer, and editor of guided meditations it interests me that people search under the term “Is guided meditation good for beginners?” My first response to this is to ask what the searcher understands by the word “beginners.”

Let me say that meditation and guided meditation are not the same.   I liken “guided meditation” to the training wheels on a bicycle when you are first learning to turn your attention inward.  Many people including myself have found the practice of different types of meditation challenging.   If, like myself, you find the practice of meditation difficult then why not begin to explore the practice of “guided meditation.”

The most important aspect of meditation and guided meditation in the view of this writer is the intention to live your life in alignment with Universal Intention as it created you to express through you. In that sense there is nothing more fulfilling and delightful than having your energy flow in alignment with Divine Intent.

Any practice of meditation or the proper practice of prayer has as its purpose to discover how to tune into the Universal energy that is given different names in different times and within different traditions. Meditation and guided meditation are training in turning your attention within. Guided meditation helps you begin this training.

I like guided meditation because it helps you to explore the inner world through imagination. When I write scripts and record guided meditations I have as my focus the development of trust and allowing.  For this writer of scripted and recorded guided meditation the energies of trust and allowing are central to learning to live the life you Love. With more experience you might choose to move more deeply into this kind of dynamic through the practice of more formal meditation.  Why not try both.

To me I am not precious about meditation over guided meditation.  If you find that guided meditation takes you within and allows you to begin the journey of awakening the magnificence within you then this starts a process that meditation proper might abort.

One thing I love about writing guided meditation is that I get to use what I call the language of the ‘deep heart’s core’ (W. B. Yeats).  This is the language of encouragement. The word “encourage” comes from the French word “cour” meaning “to enter the heart.”

When I edit and record the guided meditations the intention behind them is driven by the wish to encourage the listener to explore their inner KNOWING and to invite the revelation of the beauty within them.  I have behind these recordings the wish expressed by a favorite mystic called Hafiz of Shiraz.  He says: –

When you are alone and in darkness, I wish that I could show you the magnificence of your own being – Hafiz of Shiraz.

The revelation of the light of your own being is the purpose of meditation.  I think, however, that the language of guided meditation can support this revelation in ways that normal meditation practice cannot. This is because with the right script there is the invitation to the awakening of the heart.

As at the beginning of August 2024 I plan to open my new Substack Newsletter entitled Spiritual Pathways.  This will be a weekly newsletter that will include a guided meditation together with journal prompts that invite grounding what has been invited in that week’s guided meditation.

As of early July 2024, I am having great fun writing and recording these and I love them and hope you will love them too. In answer to the question “Is guided meditation good for beginners?” My answer would be that you try out the practice for a given time and see if you get any benefit from it.

Be aware that there are more than enough people who will advise you that such practice is opening your mind to the devil.  This is not the case if you begin with the right intention.  Let your intention to be to unfold the glory of who you are created to be.  In this way you honor the Glory that created you as a unique expression of Love’s Purpose. With this intention you become aligned with the Intelligence of the Infinite.

Give this practice of guided meditation a test.  Try out different recordings to find one that speaks to you and that really calls to your heart.  In my view this is essential exploration for learning to live a life you love.  All wisdom traditions advise that you turn within.  Guided meditation can be the first step on the journey but let it be your choice.

So let me end this blog post related to the question “Is guided meditation good for you” by sharing below a sample of a short, guided meditation entitled “Embracing Stillness.” This is my way of writing and sharing guided meditation.  There will be more to come in my Spiritual Pathways Newsletter.

There are plenty of free guided meditations on YouTube of different lengths. One thing I emphasize when you chose to listen to a guided meditation recording to which you must adhere.  This is that you MUST “like the sound of the voice.”   If you don’t like the sound of the presenters’ voice or have doubts about it in any way, then go and look for another guided meditation. This includes listening to the sound of my voice. Trust your heart in this regard.

It is my hope to add more guided meditations including spiritual reflections and mythic storytelling from modern minds here at Companioning Your Greatness.
