The power of spiritual listening begins with listening to the voice of inner wisdom. In sharing the 4th power of the 10 Powers for Awakening to Love we will explore:-

- Inner Wisdom Voice
- Finding Your Inner Voice
- Listening to Your Inner Voice
So let’s begin the journey
Inspired Spiritual Listening
The practice of spiritual listening is listening to that which is inspired within you. Spiritual listening is intentional. It is practical. It is foundational to living from an awakened heart.

A practice of spiritual listening involves listening without expectation. Expectation will come but it will come in a different way. It will come from a sense of fullness rather than from a sense of wanting and incessant desire that in Buddhist teachings is referred to as craving.
With spiritual listening you begin to connect with more subtle energies. Your mind becomes still. You begin to fall in love with the infinite silence out of which you arise. This gives you real peace of mind. The art of spiritual listening is learning to listen to the silence inside you. To begin with It appears as nothing.
Gunilla Norris writes of silence in this way.
Silence is the source of all that exists, the unfathomable stillness where vibration began – the first oscillation, the first word from which life emerged. Silence is our deepest nature, our home, our common ground, our peace.
– Gunilla Norris – Inviting Silence – How to Find Inner Stillness and Calm.
Spiritual listening is a real challenge. It is the first discipline for learning to awaken to love.
It is not a discipline that appeals to the go getter or the person driven by ideas of achievement and success because it appears that you are doing nothing.
In spiritual listening you are learning to be faithful to the inner wisdom within you. As a result you are willing to allow the unknown to be known through you and to create through you and as you.
This inner wisdom is that which is inspirational within you. Inner wisdom is accessible, not simply by changing what you think about, but learning a new way of thinking.Inner wisdom is more precious than wealth. The more you spend it, the more you gain. Oprah Winfrey Click To Tweet
This new way of thinking, that allows for inspiration and wisdom, is experienced by learning to allow the Universe to think through you. This universal thinking through you is the real inner wisdom voice.
It is not the voice of your personal mind that you identify with.
Your Wisdom Voice
The wisdom voice accessed through spiritual listening is creative and expansive. It is always expressing in the service of Love’s Purpose which is your sole purpose and your soul purpose.
Your inner wisdom voice is a strange voice. It might not appeal to many.
Firstly it is not the voice of your personal mind. It is the voice of Love’s Purpose which Creation designed to express through you.
Your inner voice is the voice of divinity. To hear it, we need to be in solitude, even in crowded places. A. R. Rahman
Secondly it is not a voice. It is know as a feeling moving through different energetic levels from excitement to enthusiasm. From this heightened energetic movement you know what to do. You will not always do what is being invited to be expressed through you.
So how to access this listening power?
Finding Your Inner Voice
Learning to find your inner voice begins through cultivating inner silence. Silence is the forgotten power. It is the doorway to the paradox of an emptiness that is forever full that will fulfill you would that you allow it.
This means you are required to still the other voice in your head.
Most of the time, rather than listen to the voice of wisdom, you listen to the voice in your head that never shuts up. I refer this voice to as “the madman in the cave of the skull.” This reference to a madman is taken from the lyrics of a Mike Scott of the Waterboys song entitled World Party.
I’ve got a madman of my own to contend with
Cursing in the cave of my skull
This unceasing voice is the everyday insanity of the human mind that is regarded as normal but has you possessed and oppressed.
So what to do?
Listening to Your Inner Voice
In order to silence this madman in the cave of your skull you begin the practice of witness consciousness.
To cultivate the Witness Consciousness, we start by cultivating the observer within us, the witnessing attitude. And this observer is not in the mind but the most intimate “I,” the Spiritual Heart (related with the chest area). We also cultivate the dis-identification from “me” as personality and “my story.” In this way, we detach gradually from the burden of all sorts of attachments, such as prejudices, desires, hopes, identifications, and tendencies.
Create space for the voice of wisdom within you by witnessing the incessant thoughts that are broadcast through your mind like static through a badly tuned radio.
Each day you commit to maintaining, at least for a little while, radio silence.
In spiritual listening you do not fight these thoughts as they enter your awareness. You simply observe them, you listen and you let go. Neither do you follow the thoughts or resist the thoughts. You go higher so that you rise above the thinking process and you stop listening to all the other voices that give you bad advice.
Inner Voice Poem
One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
their bad advice – – –
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
‘Mend my life!’
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations – – –
though their melancholy
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice,
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do – – –
determined to save
the only life you could save.
In this way you are learning to create space for finding your inner voice and your inner wisdom.
You commit to allowing this voice of wisdom, that is the voice of the heart, to speak through you. Hence in spiritual listening you learn to allow yourself to be thought through by the Source that is the One Life and the One Love.
Everyone who wills can hear the inner voice. It is within everyone. Mahatma Gandhi
We all have that inner voice that is wise, even if we don’t always follow it. It’s that voice I’m trying to listen to. Ray LaMontagne
