Spiritual growth signs are many. I distinguish between spiritual growth and spiritual awakening. Spiritual growth and development happen within time. For this writer there are no real signs of spiritual awakening. The experience of spiritual awakening happens outside of time. You receive a grace experience.  You can’t do anything to earn spiritual awakening. Your task is to invite this experience of awakening through spiritual practice.

Victor Vasnetsov’s Knight at the Crossroads painting is a free interpretation of the Russian traditional legend of The Three Journeys of Ilya Muromets. The artist depicts the hero in a moment of reflection, before a stone inscribed with the following words: “If you go straight ahead, there will be no life; there is no way forward for he who travels past, walks past or flies past.”

Spiritual Growth Signs

No 1 – Being Drawn to Silence

This is the 1st in a series of 10 sharings of spiritual growth signs. Please note, one spiritual growth sign is not more important than another. View them more as a tapestry. These threads come together to form a beautiful whole. This is real confirmation. The Universe has confirmed that you belong.

The first of these spiritual growth signs is that you are drawn more deeply into silence. At the start this feeling of being drawn into deep silence will feel anything but attractive. You will resist this silence. The servant, your personal mind, who has taken over your sovereignty knows the game is up.

The invitation contained in your deepening experience of silence is the invitation to Kingship/Queenship. You return to your sovereign state of Oneness. The feeling of being drawn is the real Law of Attraction. You feel the Force.

Deepening silence is not a revelation on the Road to Damascus. It is like the dawn arising from a moonless sky. You begin to know, in the words of Rumi, the dawn has secrets to tell you. You are learning the Secret of Secrets.

The Breeze at Dawn

The breeze at dawn
has secrets to tell you.

Don’t go back to sleep.

You must ask
for what you really want.

Don’t go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth
across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.

Don’t go back to sleep.

spiritual practice of silence

I closed my mouth and spoke to you in 100 silent ways – Rumi

Silence as a Spiritual Gift

A subtle feeling of being drawn comes to you. This delightful feeling comes through you. It is not a belief you operate from. You begin to feel a more subtle excitement. What the universe gifts you is not certain. You relax because this is not your concern You no longer worry what you are to do. You set your intention and focus your attention on being available.

Being drawn gives you a real sense of confidence. You feel confident because you, like the hero Luke Skywalker in Star Wars movie, are learning to feel the Force. This is the eternal, creative force of Love that creates all things from NO-THING. Note that NO-THING is not the same as nothing. NO-THING is infinite potential without form.

Awakening to Love draws you more deeply into the silence of NO-THING that is infinite potential. Concern for time, thought and personal identity lessen. You focus on the allowing of Presence. You feel more attractive in the real meaning of that word. There is less need for doing and effort. You allow Life to be life flowing through a body informed by Love. This is REAL information.

Silence bring the Sensational

The draw into silence is experienced as you move out of the cave of the skull (over thinking) into the body and inner body. Your life becomes more sensational but not in dramatic ways. You are learning to feel the subtle sensations of what it feels like to be fully embodied. This is especially so with the fineness of the breath. You walk the world as someone living close to the body and committed to living as a body in full Presence.

Mr. Duffy lived a short distance from his body. – James Joyce, Dubliners

You experience the draw into silence as you move out of the cave of the skull (over thinking) into the body and inner body. Your life becomes more sensational but not in dramatic ways. You are learning to feel the subtle sensations of full embodied. Fineness of the breath is a key indicator. You walk the world as someone living close to the body and committed to living as a body in full Presence.

paradox of silence

The Muse at Sunrise by Alphonse Osbert (1857-1939)

Silence as a Living Paradox

You enter a living paradox, the experience an emptiness that is forever full. Your heart is comfortable with paradox.  Paradox is the unity of opposites. Your personal mind is not comfortable with paradox. It thinks that emptiness can never be full. Do not think about this. Get still and invite the knowing of your heart. The heart knows sacred unity – the personal mind does not.

If you try to change it, you will ruin it. Try to hold it, and you will lose it.”
Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

The draw into silence is the blessings of a committed spiritual practice. This does not come without effort. You make this effort in service of effortlessness. This is the practice that allows you to really master the Law of Attraction. You are an aligned co-creator with Creation.

You will not be drawn into silence until you go beyond resistance. However, you must not fight resistance. Simply witness it. Do not energize it. Come back to the practice of simply allowing. There is no success of failure here. Success and failure is a concept of the personal mind. Awareness of resistance can be viewed either way. Simply witness your judgement as personal mind stuff. Choose between distraction or attraction. Attraction arises from the drawing near to Presence.

The German mystic Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) said, “Silence is the nearest thing to God.” God is Love. Love is who you are. Nothing is more attractive than living from the knowing you are a unique expression of Love in form. There is really no greater draw than this knowing.
